Aminadabu Birara

Epiphanie’s father, elder of the Tutsi. An imposing figure despite his 60 odd years, Birara has always been a pillar of the community. Over the years, as a much younger man, Birara successfully lead smaller counter-attacks to anti-Tutsi pogroms, and his reputation was legendary among the Tutsi of Bisesero. Keenly aware of the need for cultural harmony, Birara often gave cows to his Hutu neighbors – a ceremony that was supposed to bond families like blood. But in April of 1994, there had never been a concerted, large scale attack like this before. Thousands of organized militias began wiping out Tutsi communities around him and tens of thousands of men, women and children fled to Birara’s home on Muyira Hill. With his eldest son Nzigira and other lieutenants by his side, Birara’s guerilla style tactics repulse the first waves of attacks on the hill. Soon, however, heavily armed forces join the effort, and the Tutsi, including Birara are doomed. His last command is – everyone for themselves, do whatever you can to survive.
