Epiphanie’s mother. In a rural area and era where prominent Rwandan men could have two farms and two families, Evaliana is the second wife of Birara. Evaliana is in her fifties, and runs her household with complete command. Evaliana is protective of her husband Birara, and firm with Epiphanie about taking unnecessary chances during the tense times leading up to the violence. During the fighting, she stays behind to help with the crucial task of protecting the elderly and children, with an unquestioned loyalty to her husband’s leadership.
